Follow Your Passion

Three years ago I was studying Sports Science at Deakin University in Melbourne. My plan was to transfer into Physiotherapy at the end of my first year at Uni. I had studied hard and got the grades I needed to transfer. I was happy, but I wasn’t sure if it was what I really wanted to go into, or just a career that caught my attention in high school. I could hear my inner voice asking myself, “What do you really want to do with your life?” I felt uneasy by my lack of direction. I was waiting for a sign as to what I should throw myself into. This feeling stayed with me for a while…

While this was going on, I had started making surfboards in my backyard and was absolutely loving it. My dream for growing Monsta Surf had consumed me.

One year later, we launched the Monsta clothing line and I quit my part time job… And now two months ago, I dropped out of uni, took control of my life and I have never felt so alive.

It hasn't all been palm trees and sunshine though.

Even though I have been building my brand for a few years now, it has been a crazy ride of ups & downs, excitement and fear. With no experience in business, it has been a tough learning curve and there has been times where I wasn't sure if this dream would ever be able to support myself or if it would be sustainable.

Following my passion was a massive leap of faith, especially for a guy like me trying to start a surf brand with no experience, no funding and who lives in Melbourne where there are no waves… But I never listened to the negative thoughts or those who told me “it’s never going to work” because I knew that this was my passion and it was what I loved to do.

We were all created uniquely with our own passions. Do you feel as though your life lacks purpose and excitement? Following your passion can change that. Following your passion gives you your own light to follow. You feel motivated and inspired to take on each and everyday. It doesn’t mean that things are going to happen overnight, or come naturally…you have to stay focused and work hard. Surround yourself with people that can make a solid investment into your growth. Embrace the lessons, learn from failure - but keep going.

So in your life, take the time to slow down to find what you’re really searching for. Allow yourself some space to get away from the chaos and search your heart. Ground yourself in confidence and courage, discover why you were placed on this earth and learn to share your uniqueness with the world. Focus on what you love to do and what you would be doing today if money wasn't an issue. And lastly, push past fear so you can start chasing after your own dreams.

“Don’t worry about what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive and do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman
