Embrace the Adventure of Life
Words by Erin Vandenberg. The most adventurous person I've ever met. - Cam Greenwood
Life's just one big adventure. A bit like a story book really, there's a start, a middle and an end. It's up to you really how you want to write out the middle bit.
Chase your dreams
I’d like to think I'm a pretty positive person. Looking at life for all of the beauty it is. It seems like a waste not to go explore all its glory.
Sometimes I look over my life and think it's crazy how much I have done. At 22 years old I have graduated university with a Bachelor of Exercise Health Science majoring in outdoor education, been through some pretty crazy medical instances, traveled the world having been to 17 countries, volunteered in Africa, worked in England for a year, worked as a lifeguard in a summer camp in America and made some incredible life long friends. After a scary shock of being diagnosed with a blood clot in the left side of my brain, unexplained double vision and 6 months of medication and being unable to do a whole lot of what I loved, it made me realise how short life really can be. What if things were different, what if I didn't get 100% healed, how would that have affected my life? Things could have turned out a lot differently, and in some ways it did. I became a lot closer to God and had a new way of looking at life: to grasp it at its fullest and do everything you've ever imagined with a positive attitude and smile on your face.
I'm happy to look back on my life already and say I'm so pleased with what I have done. I have learnt so much about myself and this incredible world. I think it's super important to go out and just do what you have dreamt of. Sometimes it's worth living by the corny sayings of 'you only live once', 'live everyday like it’s your last'... It's easy to sometimes just say these and not act upon them, but I'm a huge believer in living your life while you can. You never know what lies around the corner or what life may have in store for you, so why not do it while you can? Striving to do what you’re passionate about when you’re young isn't going to be something you regret. I don't believe in regrets in life. You should never regret something you have done, because everything happens for a reason. Even those things you may have done that you’re not proud of, you learn from them. The more positive and enthusiastic you are about your life the more enjoyable it will be. My passion is travelling and people, that may not be for you but I encourage everyone to just go and do it. It doesn't matter how young you are.
There's still so much more I want to do, and I still have so much time too! I've only skimmed the surface of life and I'm happy that I can already look back and actually say that I'm proud of what I have achieved and who I have become. I have made so many different friends from around the world and have embraced so many different experiences that have shaped who I am today. Sometimes it's hard not to compare your life to someone else's, and Facebook/Instagram doesn't help in the slightest. It's too easy to scroll through your newsfeed looking at people's travel photos, jobs, boyfriends/girlfriends, happy sunshine summer body snaps and think to yourself.... 'I wish my life was that interesting and eventful', or 'I wish I looked like that'. But you know what, your life can be interesting! Firstly stop scrolling through your newsfeed living through other people's Facebook lives, it doesn't help anyone or yourself. Be confident in who you are and what you're about. A positive attitude to not only life but towards yourself as a human can make all the difference in the world. Your smile will become 10X bigger and 100X more meaningful.
Make a list! A list of everything you would love to do in life. It can have some crazy stuff down there as well as some not so crazy, maybe more grounded things! Now look at your list and think to yourself, why am I not already doing some of these things, what's my reason for having this as a dream but not pursuing it, what's holding me back?
Change it, change what's holding you back from your dream. Why continue doing something if you're not passionate about it. Isn't that what life's about? Adventure, passion, experience, opportunities, making a difference and doing what you love. Life flies by when you're having fun, and to me that's not such a bad thing.
If you work hard enough and set a goal you can achieve it no matter how big or small it is. Have faith! Your dream might be as simple as wanting to get that job you've been looking at for ages, or it might be as big as traveling the world! Sometimes you have to just say 'stuff it' and just go do it.
I'm a big believer in just going for it and doing it. Book that ticket to that random country. Experience what life has to offer. I don't know what day’s going to be my last. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 70 years. Continue being your big beautiful selves! Salvage those friendships, spend time with your loved ones, experience the world. What's a better way to live than living happy!?
Some say I'm crazy, I prefer adventurous.
